During the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, the term super club was born. These referred to extremely large night clubs which could hope many thousands of people. Top quality DJ’s made up residences at places such as Cream in Liverpool, Ministry of Sound in London etc. But these quickly disappear as attendances dropped off. The main issue was that to support the sheer size of these clubs, they needed to be full. Was this drop off due to the shift in dance music? Perhaps, Trance was very big during this time and was well suited to large venues, but now people are preferring to attend more intimate club nights at smaller venues, which also seem less commercial (although generally are not). Also attendances at gigs and indie playing clubs are up, due to the introduction of internet piracy, record labels have had to replace revenues from album sales to live performances, changing the way bands are promoted. This could have a knock on effect on club nights as although to different genres of music there is a strong cross over between the two audiences

London has two massive New Years Eve club nights this year:

Ministry of Sound @ O2 Arena

Although the tickets are pricey at approximately £75, the lineup is immense, Calvin Harris, Deadmau5, Justice, Plump DJs, Dave Spoon, Example, plus Eric Prydz.

This will definitely be a big night out, although I am put off by the pricing structure of the event, costing £50 for the upper bowl, then £75 for free flowing access

This at a better price of £35 and has a smaller but good lineup including Simian Mobile Disco, Chase and Status, Annie Mac, Herve, Sub Focus plus many more DJs

Daft Punk seems to be making headlines again, but all due to unconfirmed internet rumors. Daft punk last toured was in 2007 with the Alive tour and the last studio album was “Human After All” released in 2005, an Australian music website was leaked an unconfirmed report that they have seen a tour date list with Daft Punk on in September 2010.

But this has been rebutted by a spokesman for the act saying, “The recent rumors of a Daft Punk tour are false, we would like to ensure that no fans are taken advantage of by fictitious rumors of upcoming shows”

Back in 2008 the dance festival of the year for me had got to be South West Four down in Clapham common, so as you can appreciate I thought 2009 was going to be bigger and better. Far from the truth, SW4 2009 was a poor attempt at a dance festival. The sound system was poor and lost the bass after 3 lines of people back from the speakers, the line up was poor and the weather was cool (the last point the organizers can do nothing about). So what was the reason for the massive shift from best to worst. It think the main problem being that they extended the weekend to cover another night on the Sunday, spreading the overall festival too thin

My tickets for Soulwax in Manchester have arrived which has got me all excited about the up and coming event. Soulwax also known as 2 Many DJ’s, they are a DJ act from Ghent in Belgium, they are remembered for their short remixes of popular chart music into Dance-punk style tracks.
Although I have seen them on many occasions in Manchester, it will hopefully be the perfect act to get me into the Christmas mood as there are limited about of good club nights happening in the city this season. Hopefully this will be a good introduction in there rumored work to be least in 2010

The term House music is such as generic term for a genre of dance music, and is probably better described from the geographical origins of the genre. If you take classic house which is born out of the clubs of Chicago and New York or Acid house which was generated from the raving period within the UK, mainly London and the illegal raves around the M25.
But what is clear to me, especially thought out the end of the 1990’s to the end of the 2000’s that the French have the most unique sound and loyal following of house music. Daft Punk is the perfect examples of the French music sense and they have kindly handed the baton over to Justice to continue the French reign over the House sense.
But how long can this last for. There has been a lot of chatter about the Parisian authorities creating restrictions on noise levels at unsocialable times making it harder for the classic French house music club to exist.

Radio 1’s Zane Lowe is putting on a Masterpieces for the 2nd Daft Punk album Discovery on Thursday 3rd Dec 2009 from 7pm (GMT) onwards

New Years Eve is always a difficult one to plan. If you host a party you have the added pressure that its New Year and you feel forced to put on a special performance, if you going to a party you feel like you have to have a good time and that the expectations are high. So why not go to a club night where you know its going to be full of like minded people all respecting the same vibe. The obvious choices in Manchester are the Warehouse Project which is supposed to be the best club night in the UK at the moment, the other night in Manchester is Sankeys which has more of a loyal fallowing. If you wanted to venture into the big smoke with the demise of “The End” then the only one I would recommend would be Fabric for New Year. In Leeds you can check out Mission, although in my opinion this has really gone downhill in the last 18 months

The Warehouse Project in Manchester is in it’s 4th year and is still as popular as ever. The venue is an underground car park under Piccadilly train station and attracts top DJ’s from all around the world. It is so popular with the clubbers in Manchester that you have to buy tickets months in advance. But is its success also its downfall. The type of clubs that go have changed and not for the better. I guess you could refer to as going commercial and main stream. The main issue I have is back in the 2nd year of WHP you could buy tickets on the door which meant that you didn’t need to plan way in advance but now the spontaneity has disappeared.
